Kissimmee Tibits
Several years prior to 1880, Kissimmee was known as a trading post by the name of Allendale. It was named after Major J.H. Allen of Winchester, Kentucky. He had a dock, a commissary, and a sawmill on the lake among the cypress trees below what was once Mickler’s Mill. It was here that he built his first steamboat, Mary Belle. By 1881, there was a single house in what is now recognized as Kissimmee, and it was Major Allen’s log house. In 1882, Kissimmee existed in name only, but with the land deal that Hamilton Disston made when he purchased four million acres from the state at 25 cents per acre, the area took on such vigor and moneyed activities that businesses in every line grew leaps and bounds. The following year was a historic one for the trading post. On January 22, 1883, there was an election to change the name from Allendale to Kissimmee City with 23 votes for the incorporation and 17 opposed.
